Bio
Matthew Hake was born in St. Louis, MO. He taught Instrumental Music in the Saint Louis Public Schools and currently teaches General and Instrumental Music Grades K-8 at Immaculate Conception School in Columbia, IL. He earned his B.M.E from the University of Missouri-St. Louis and M.A. in Jazz Studies from Webster University. While at Webster University, he served as Graduate Assistant. Matt studied classical percussion with Tom Stubbs of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra and drum set with Kevin Gianino. He has performed with the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra, the St. Louis Philharmonic, the Belleville Philharmonic, St. Louis Brass Band and Second Generation Swing. Matt was invited by the Chicago Brass Band to represent the United States at the World Music Festival in Kerkrade, Holland and tour of Holland. As part of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra's EXTRA CREDIT program, Matt performed two side by side concerts with members of the SLSO and fellow music educators.
Currently, Matt plays drums with his trio Main Street Jazz. He is also the drummer for The Late Greats a rock n' roll band he formed with friends and fellow musicians from college. When he is not playing drum set, Matt plays solo gigs and sits in with various jazz groups on vibraphone. His repertoire includes music by contemporary jazz artists Jonathan Kreisberg, Joe Locke, Aaron Parks, Kurt Rosenwinkel as well as jazz standards. He also covers alternative rock artists such as Imagine Dragons and Nirvana. Matt released and album of original compositions in the fall of 2014. On Solo Sessions, Matt plays all of the instruments including acoustic guitar, bass, keyboards, vibraphone and drums. In the fall of 2019, The Late Greats released their debut EP Drumroll and subsequently headlined the Duck Room in early 2020.
